You will notice a new playground at the former St. Brigid Convent lawn on East 4th Street. In Cooperation with Colin’s Joy Project this playground will be a welcome addition to our new Early Childhood Center at South Boston Catholic Academy. Colin was enrolled in our Early Childhood Program before his unexpected death in the summer of 2018. In his memory, this playground will keep Colin’s spirit of joy and laughter alive in the lives of the children at our Early Childhood Center. On October 4, 2022 the McGrath family along with the Toddler and K0 students, families, faculty and staff and Ms. MaryKate Bourdon, the Director of our Early Childhood Center celebrated the opening of the new playground. Dr. Helenann Civian, our Principal, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the McGrath family on behalf of all us at SBCA, and Father Robert Casey, our Pastor, lead us all in a special prayer and Blessed the playground, then the McGrath Family officially dedicated and opened the playground in the memory of their son, Colin, with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Ms. Jessica Genovese, our new K0-K1 STEM Lab Teacher. She has been with South Boston Catholic Academy for the last 6 years as a K0 Teacher. Ms. Jessica is a graduate of Bridgewater State College where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduation, she obtained her Infant, Toddler, Preschool Teacher EEC Certification through the state of MA. She completed her Masters degree in Early Childhood Education through the Lynch Foundation at Cambridge College. This year she has switched gears to teach early childhood STEM classes for our K0 and K1 classes, helping them explore science, technology, engineering, and math concepts! In her spare time, Ms. Jessica enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Ms. Lauren Monaghan, is our new K2 to 6th Grade STEM Lab Teacher at South Boston Catholic Academy. While this is her first year with us, she cannot wait to be a part of the SBCA family and grow, learn, and thrive right alongside her students. She is a graduate of Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education with a minor in Educational Technology. Ms. Monaghan was born and raised in Pennsylvania and relocated to Boston about a year and a half ago. For almost a decade, Ms. Monaghan has worked with children of various ages in a multitude of settings, cherishing the importance of being a positive influence and helping to guide students to success both within the four walls of the classroom as well as the community. In her spare time, Ms. Monaghan enjoys reading, spending time with family and friends, and being outdoors. This coming school year, she is hoping to bring the STEM Lab to life as well as cultivate meaningful memories, magic, and instruction. STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines- science, technology, engineering and mathematics- in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate subjects, here in our lab, we are going to integrate them into a cohesive learning program based on real-world applications. With that being said, throughout the academic year, we will be focusing on hands-on instruction which gets students involved in their own learning. We look forward to giving you a look at all of the magic that we will be creating in the STEM room this upcoming school year! New families are welcome to email our admissions team at: admissions@sbcatholicacademy.org for more info. about South Boston Catholic Academy.

The Student Council visited the State House for a tour with Representative David Biele. Students toured the building, learned about its history and were recognized on the House floor. Thank you to Representative David Biele and to everyone at the State House for making this special visit possible for our Student Council members at South Boston Catholic Academy. The 3rd Graders had a chance to visit a very important historical landmark in our Massachusetts history, the Plimoth Pawtuxet Museum. Plymouth Plantation changed its name to “Plimoth Patuxet,” founded in 1947 the museum replicates the settlement of the Plymouth Colony, established in the 17th century in honor of the Wampanoag name for the region. The 3rd Graders got to have a small glimpse of what life was like for the Wampanoag before the Europeans came to North America. The students loved boarding the Mayflower ship. They learned that the Pilgrims had originally hoped to reach America by early October using two ships, but delays and complications meant they could use only one ship. The Mayflower is one of the most important ships in American history. This cargo ship brought the pilgrims to Massachusetts during the Great Puritan Migration in the 17th century. These pilgrims were some of the first settlers to America after they established the Plymouth Colony. On December 18 they docked at Plymouth Rock, on the western side of Cape Cod Bay. Against great odds, they made the famous 1620 voyage aboard the ship Mayflower and founded the Plymouth Colony. The students, also, had a chance to see the Plymouth Village and learned how the pilgrims adjusted to life in Massachusetts. Thank you to all members of the Plimoth Pawtuxet Museum for making this such a memorable experience for our 3rd Graders. The students in K2 had a fun and exciting day visiting the Franklin Park Zoo where they had a chance to see and learn all about the many different and amazing animals that live there. Some of the children’s favorite animals were the Tropical Forest Animals, Lions, Red Pandas, Bird’s World, Gorillas, Wallabies, Ball Pythons, Crocodiles, Kangaroos, Baby Hippos, and Baby Ducks. Thank you to all of the staff at the Franklin Park Zoo for helping our K2 students see and learn about the various animals the zoo has from all over the world. South Boston Catholic Academy News Third Grade News What am I looking at? - Grade 3A students, at South Boston Catholic Academy, participated in the survey project. Students were told to create a survey question with 3-5 options to answer. They were asked to survey at least 15 people. Then they created data tables and bar graphs to visually represent their data. Finally they included at least 3 findings that they learned from their data. The students put a lot of thought, time and effort and did a fantastic job on their surveys and thoroughly enjoyed working on this class project! All of the third graders at SBCA completed a survey project as their culminating activity for their math unit on graphing and data. Students in 3B were tasked with creating a question to ask of others along with options for the people surveyed to choose from. For example, a few questions students asked were “What is your favorite type of dog?” or “What is your favorite subject in school?” Students asked fifteen people to choose a response and then created a data table and bar graph based on the results. Finally, students were asked to report three findings from their survey. Students were then able to share their projects with their classmates and hang them in the school hallways. This was such a fun way for the third graders to apply what they have learned in math class to a real life context! The projects turned out great, and the teachers are so proud! In grade 3C, the survey project was a great way to have our students use what they were learning about collecting and representing data. We wanted them to show their understanding in a fun and interactive way. Students were asked to pick a topic that was interesting and important to them to see how their opinions compared to those of their classmates. They came up with some amazing ideas! New families are welcome to email Mrs. Jamie Brown at j.brown@sbcatholicacademy.org for more information about South Boston Catholic Academy.
