On Thursday, February 17, 2022, the students and teachers at South Boston Catholic Academy had a great day Celebrating our 100 Day of School, especially the students in K2, 1st, and 2nd Grades, as you can see from the photos! "1A had an exciting 100th day of school. We came to school wearing a hat or shirt decorated with 100 items. Wow, what creative ideas everyone had! We pulled together our daily activities such as; tallying 100 days of school, putting 100 days of weather on bar graphs, grouping our tens and ones finally into a group of 100, making different combinations of 100 cents, as well as some writing activities. What a fun day of learning!" “The children in 1B class did a 100th Day project using M&M's. They used hundreds of M&Ms. But they couldn't eat them!! They had to sort the M&Ms by color and then count them using tally marks. Some people counted by fives and some people counted by tens. They had to check to make sure everyone agreed with the sums so they could answer questions. When the project was done, those M&M's were thrown away. Subsequently, each child got a small bag of M&M's to take home!!” “The students in 1C also had a fun, exciting, and creative day of learning and celebrating their 100th day of school. They put a ton of thought and effort into designing their hats/shirts, just as all the other students did on their class projects! Happy 100th Day Everyone! Families are welcome to email Mrs. Jamie Brown at j.brown@sbcatholicacademy.org for more information about SBCA.

We hope everyone had a wonderful St. Valentine’s Day! The students at South Boston Catholic Academy thoroughly enjoyed their St. Valentine’s Day by making a variety of colorful artwork, crafts and decorations. They, also, handed out Valentine’s Day cards to their classmates and friends during their Valentine parties in their classrooms. One of many accounts/stories about St. Valentine is that…Saint Valentine is the patron saint of love. Believers say God worked through his life to perform miracles and teach people how to recognize and experience true love. This famous saint, an Italian doctor who later became a priest, inspired the creation of the holiday of Valentine's Day. He was sent to jail for performing weddings for couples during a time when new marriages were outlawed in ancient Rome. Before he was killed for refusing to renounce his faith, he sent a loving note to a child he had been helping to teach, the daughter of his jailer, and that note eventually led to the tradition of sending Valentine's cards. Prayer: Dear Jesus, Help me to love You in the same selfless way in which St. Valentine did, and by my example may others know that You love them. Amen. “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.” – Helen Keller, Author. Service.”— During this school-wide celebration, we were able to focus on faith development, academic excellence, and dedication to community service. We are so very proud of each and every one of our wonderful students and very thankful to all our families, teachers, and staff for their dedication, hard work, and support. Each day of this week had activities planned around a special theme/acknowledgment such as … Our Community, Our Students, Our Nation, Our Vocations, Our Faculty, Staff and Volunteers, and Our Families. Thursday was Student Appreciation Day and everyone got to enjoy pizza for lunch. Grades 3-6: had a Classroom Spelling Bee. Thank you to Mr. Chance Hebert, the Coordinator of Catholic Identity, for organizing these themes, to the students, families, teachers, and to all who helped to make this past week a very special, faith inspiring and fun week for all! “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old, they will not turn from it.” – Proverbs 22:6 In 1A - Students did a fanatic job writing about why they love attending our Catholic School. Some said, “At SBCA I learn about Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.” And “At SBCA I learn about Jesus and pray to God and learn the Bible.” In 1B - One of the songs we sing in the morning to start our day is- "Thank You God For Giving Us SBCA!" The children in Grade 1B were engaged in a brainstorming session to share ideas of what makes our school, " A Special Catholic School!" Then, they got a picture that was close to their idea to color. In 1C- We wrote about why we LOVE SBCA. The students were so excited to share the many reasons they love going to this school, specifically for the teachers, being with their friends every day, and learning in math, reading, writing, and religion. We are so thankful to be a part of a great school and community! A little about SBCA… We are inspired by the traditions of our Catholic faith, family spirit, and academic excellence, we are committed to meeting the spiritual, academic, physical, and social needs of individual students within a learning environment that is both stimulating and supportive. In the winter season we can cozy up with a good book; draw and color a snowman or wintery scene; play in the snow and make a snowman; enjoy a warm bowl of soup and a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows; cut out and make decorative snowflakes; go for walks, sledding, ice skating and skiing in the great outdoors and so much more… As you can see from the pictures, the students of South Boston Catholic Academy are enjoying this winter season. The Kindergarten students read the book, A Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats during story time in their classrooms and had fun making a picture based on this story. Some students made pictures of a colorful snowman and a big cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows out of construction paper, crayons, glue and shaving cream and some cut out beautiful snowflakes. The older students have gone for walks to the park to play while enjoying the cool crisp fresh air and winter scenery. Here are some other popular Winter Books the children in the Early Childhood Program like to have read to them during story time... The Biggest Snowman Ever by Steven Kroll; The Mitten by Jan Brett; The Hat by Jan Brett; Sneezy the Snowman by Maureen Wright; The Itsy Bitsy Snowman by Jeffery Burton; Ten on a Sled by Kim Norman and Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter by Kenard Pak. Happy Winter Everyone! “If winter comes, can spring be far behind?”― Percy Bysshe Shelley “You can’t get too much winter in the winter.”– Robert Frost. A Big Thank you to Mrs. Liz Brooks for organizing this book fair and to all the parents and families that helped to make it a very successful book fair. Here are some famous quotes regarding reading books… “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” - Frederick Douglas; “Oh, magic hour, when a child first knows she can read printed words!” - Betty Smith ; “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” - Margaret Fuller; “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island.” - Walt Disney; “If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book.” - J.K. Rowling and “I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.” - Roald Dahl. The students at South Boston Catholic Academy read about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and did projects in their classroom and during Art Class based on his achievements and legacy. Through these projects, they learned why he is such a special and honored person. Martin Luther King Jr. was just a normal child who did normal things and he grew up to do great, important accomplishments in life. He inspired people around the world with a message of peaceful resistance and racial equality. We, too, all have the potential to do great things and make a positive difference in the world. With Dr. King, Jr’s, as a role model, some of the students in K0 and K1 said this is what they would do… “To change the World I Will”… “Be kind; Be helpful to Mom and Dad; Play with my sister; Help my family and friends; Love others; Share toys; Not fight; Help people feel better when they are sick; Use kind words and Clean the earth.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesman and leader in the American Civil Rights Movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. Dr. King, Jr. advanced civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi. Dr. King, Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964; he was the youngest person to ever receive this high honor. He was the son of early civil rights activist and minister Martin Luther King Sr. On January 17, 2022, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, marked the 27th Anniversary of the National Day of Service. This day was established to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, Jr., and to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Dr. King Jr’s most famous work is his “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered in 1963, in which he spoke of his dream of a United States that is void of segregation and racism. Some of Dr. King Jr’s. famous and inspirational quotes are…"The time is always right to do what is right." "We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope." "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." "True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice." "Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope." Happy Birthday Dr. King! Thank you and God Bless you! New families are welcome to email Mrs. Jamie Brown at j.brown@sbcatholicacademy.org to learn more about South Boston Catholic Academy.

The South Boston Catholic Academy Student Council Hosted their Annual Toy Drive for Toys for Tots. Thank you to our terrific Student Council members for their great work, Ms. Brogan, our Physical Education Teacher, for organizing this drive, and to all our students, families, and friends that donated new and unwrapped toys to this year’s Toys for Tots drive @marinetoysfortotsfoundation! Ms. Hoisl’s and Ms. Smith’s sixth-graders did an amazing job with their class project of creating their very own Enchanted Village of South Boston 2021! The sixth graders also guided and helped the other students from grades K0 to 5 with the scavenger hunt that was included with this class project. To celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe's Feast Day on December 12th, the students in Ms. Avery’s Spanish Class learned how Mother Mary appeared to a farmer named Juan Diego in Mexico in 1531 and gave hope to the people of Mexico. Our Lady gave roses to Juan Diego as a sign that she truly appeared, and our first and second graders made their own flowers that we put on the bulletin board. Students also took a virtual field trip via Google Earth to Mexico where we saw the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. May we remember to come to Mary as our spiritual Mother as she always leads us closer to her Son, Jesus. The students in K2 did a fantastic job capturing the true meaning of the Christmas season, celebrating Jesus’ Birthday, on their bulletin boards in front of their classrooms. On behalf of our Principal Dr. Civian, the faculty, and staff at South Boston Catholic Academy we wish everyone a Healthy and Happy 2022! God Bless Everyone! “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language. And next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.” – T.S. Eliot. In the beginning of November, Mr. Cole Stautberg's third grade class tested their wind vanes for three days to track the wind direction. Tracking this data helped them understand how air pressure can push air masses around to create wind. This assisted them in understanding the weather of our world and how it is created. We also welcomed back Mrs. Emily McGilvery, our former K0 Teacher, as our new STEM Teacher for our students in the Early Childhood Program. STEM is an acronym for the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Each subject or pillar is part of the greater whole of the lesson plan. So instead of teaching math as separate from technology or science, the concepts work together. From November 8 to November 22, SBCA students/families brought in nonperishable items for the Annual Food Drive we had at South Boston Catholic Academy to help families in our community have a Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you to everyone who generously donated to this Food Drive. On November 24, in the spirit of Thanksgiving and the ending to the Liturgical Year, the 6th grade class led us, via intercom, in a prayer of Thanksgiving that consisted of the Prayer of St. Francis…Lord make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith… and they also did readings from the Psalms and A Litany of Gratitude to God... “Father, We Give You Thanks”. Quoting our Principal, Dr. Helenann Civian, “As we reflect on the many things for which we are thankful for, I want to take this opportunity to share just a few of them with you: We are thankful for our students who come to school every day ready to learn – they give us all a daily reminder of what is important and why we are here. We are thankful for the teachers, assistants, health aides, secretaries, nurses, support staff, and administrators who really care about student achievement and have the best interests of our students at heart. We are also thankful for our volunteers who enthusiastically contribute so much to our school. In these most difficult and challenging times, we see dedicated and tireless individuals going above and beyond to make sure that great things happen in our school. They do make a difference, and the children, in their own individual ways, benefit from those efforts. Thank you to our families and to everyone for helping to make this 2021-2022 school year possible for all.” This past Sunday, Nov. 28, marked the First Sunday of Advent and the beginning of a new Liturgical Year. Father Christopher Boyle, our Parochial Vicar, Blessed the Advent wreath and lit the first purple candle on the Advent wreath during the 10:30 Mass at St. Brigid Church. Advent is a Latin word that actually means “coming.” It refers to the period encompassing the four Sundays prior to Christmas. In Christian churches everywhere, Advent is a time of preparation and waiting for the birth of Jesus at Christmas. The candles on the Advent wreath symbolize hope, love, joy and peace. The circular shape of the wreath, without beginning or end, symbolizes God's complete and unending love for us—a love that sent his Son into the world to redeem us from sin. It also represents eternal life which becomes ours through faith in Jesus Christ. Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! In this season of thanksgiving, we wanted to congratulate our new Student Council Members and thank them for their help during this school year. South Boston Catholic Academy students elected their student council representatives in Grades 2-6. The students campaigned for two weeks and presented their speeches to the student body. We are so proud of all the students who ran for Student Council and look forward to working with our student leaders who will be guided by Ms. Erin Brogan, our Physical Education Teacher. Our new Student Council members have been very busy working on the Candy Drive. The SBCA Students were asked to bring in any extra candy that they got for Halloween. The students brought in a bunch of candy and the Student Council helped organize the candy to be sent to the Military and First Responders. We can’t wait to see what the Student Council has planned for us this Christmas! For Thanksgiving, our students and families brought in nonperishable items for the Annual Food Drive we had at school to help families in our community have a Happy Thanksgiving. The K2 students have been busy getting ready for Thanksgiving and sharing what they are most thankful for and some students said… their family, mom and dad, Jesus, their teachers and brother, playing with friends, angels, their dog, their house and the earth and they are learning ways to show ten in math so each turkey feather shows a way to make ten. “The thankful heart opens our eyes to a multitude of blessings that continually surround us.”…By James E. Faust. On behalf of our Principal, Dr. Helenann Civian, and all of us at South Boston Catholic Academy, we wish everyone a Healthy and Happy Thanksgiving! Quoting our 4th Grade Teacher, Mrs. Kellie Defelice …“On Wednesday, November 10th, 2021 SSG Marco Defelice, a veteran, came to speak to South Boston Catholic Academy students in grades 3-6. He told them his background and let them ask him questions. He has been in the MA National Guard for 15 years and has done three tours, two deployments to Iraq and one to Afghanistan. The students enjoyed asking him questions. They asked him things like, “what inspired you to join the Military?” and his response was to give back to the country that gave him so much when he immigrated here from Scotland. The students even gave him a box of Halloween candy they collected for the Military and First Responders to share with his unit. He has reported back that he ate too many peanut butter cups!” We all want to say a Special Thank you to Staff Sergeant Marco Defelice for visiting our school in honor of Veteran’s Day, to Mrs. Defelice for making this very special event possible for the students at SBCA and Thank you to our students for the kindness and respect they showed SSG Defelice by giving him a standing ovation and for their great questions. The students in grades 4 and 5, also, had an opportunity to interact and ask questions with a Veteran Marine via Zoom in their classrooms thanks to the Travis Manion Foundation. At school all the students did various projects in their classrooms to honor our Veterans…Our Art Teacher, Ms. Valarie Szmurlo, had the students draw, color and make their very own poppies and they proudly wore the poppies they made to honor all our Veterans. Poppies are the red flowers used as a symbol around the world to remember those who died in military service. ... However, the poppies are also worn on veterans' lapels and often placed individually at a gravesite to represent honoring and respecting those who sacrificed their lives in military conflict. Our Spanish Teacher, Ms. Taylor Avery, had the students make cards and write letters in Spanish thanking our Veterans. Gracias por su servicio! Thank you to all our Veterans for your service to defend our nation and freedom! May God Bless and protect all our Veterans! From Ms. Katie Tempinski … The children in K1B are social and love to learn! This month they have been learning about each other during Morning Meeting. They have brought in items from home in the class “All About Me” bag. When it is each child’s turn they talk about the items they brought in and share why the items are special to them and their family. Every day at Morning Meeting K1B sings their good morning song in English and in Spanish and says their good morning prayer. The children take turns with classroom jobs, say the Pledge of Allegiance, place the date on the calendar, report the weather and count how many days they have been in school. The children look forward to center time where they do a variety of hands-on math, language, literacy, science, social, fine motor and art activities. K1B enjoys working together with their peers and teachers during this small group time. We recently went on a fall walk and a leaf hunt and had a chance to enjoy a beautiful autumn day.
