STEM

Inspiring Young Innovators
Our Elementary STEM education introduces young learners to the foundations of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through hands-on, inquiry-based, activities. In class, we encourage students to learn by doing, experimenting and testing ideas. Some activities in class include building simple machines (an inclined plane using keva planks), real world connections, like building a model of bridge (engineering), and measuring its strength (math). In addition to this, we use tools like coding robots (Bee-Bots,
Botley’s, code and go mice), simple programming platforms (Scratch Jr.), and
ipad’s for interactive applications.

Interdisciplinary Approach

At South Boston Catholic Academy, we provide an interdisciplinary approach to education that emphasizes problem-solving, critical thinking, and real-world application. Our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program is designed to integrate these disciplines in a way that fosters innovation, collaboration, and the development of essential skills needed to address complex, real-world challenges.
Our STEM education introduces young learners to foundational STEM concepts through engaging, hands-on, and inquiry-based activities. In our classrooms, students are encouraged to actively explore, experiment, and test their ideas, fostering a deep understanding of core principles. Classroom activities include constructing simple machines, such as inclined planes using KEVA planks, and making real-world connections by designing bridge models to explore engineering concepts and assessing their strength through mathematical analysis.
Additionally, students utilize a variety of technological tools to enhance their learning experience, including coding robots such as Bee-Bots, Botleys, and Code & Go mice, as well as introductory programming platforms like Scratch Jr. and interactive applications on iPads. These tools provide students with opportunities to develop computational thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills in an engaging and interactive learning environment.
